Family:

Veronica “Vera” Anderson was a 42-year-old mother of two from Widnes, Cheshire.

Other Factors:

Vera left her home in Hadfield Close, Widnes, at 10.10pm the evening before her body was found after asking her neighbour to watch her six-year-old son because she "had an appointment".

Vera left her little boy with a neighbour on the evening on the 24th August 1991. Vera told her neighbour that she would not be long and had left her television on. But she did take time to clear the boot of her car. The police suspect Vera was lured out of her home after receiving a phone call at around 10pm, but have yet to trace the caller.

In the early hours of the morning, Vera was found in her car off Tannery Lane, Warrington. A local resident had been keeping an eye on the local area because he was concerned someone would try to break into his car. This is when he found Vera.

Vera had suffered horrendous injuries, including injuries to her neck which likely caused instantaneous death. The police recovered a glove, and a blank firearms’ cartridge in the car.

The pathology report suggested Vera died sometime between 11:30pm and 2:30am. But in a 2024 newspaper article, there was a report that Vera might have died between 10:45pm and 11:15pm on the 24th August.

In 2022, a 70-year-old man was arrested and questioned in relation to Vera’s death, but released. In 2023, the police said that he was still under investigation, but the case has not progressed further.
